Staten Island’s North Shore to Host NYC’s Largest Eco-Friendly Housing Project

New York City is poised to redefine sustainable urban living with its latest development on Staten Island’s North Shore.The city has unveiled plans for its largest mass timber residential project, signaling a significant shift towards eco-friendly construction. This initiative is part of a broader $400 million investment aimed at revitalizing the area, which includes the creation of 2,400 new homes, over 7,500 jobs, and more than 20 acres of public space. The development is expected to generate an economic impact of $3.8 billion over the next three decades.

The project will transform two vacant sites along Stapleton’s waterfront into a mixed-income community, offering 500 housing units, with 25% designated as affordable for families earning between 40% and 80% of the area median income.Utilizing mass timber—a sustainable, engineered wood known for reducing carbon emissions and expediting construction—the development aligns with the city’s “Green Economy Action Plan,” which aims to create 400,000 green jobs by 2040.
