Jamie Dornan fled to a country hideaway to escape ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ mockery: ‘I hid’

Like Anastasia Steele heading to Christian Grey’s faraway mansion, actor Jamie Dornan fled to a country house to escape public embarrassment after “Fifty Shades of Grey” hit theaters.

“I hid,” Dornan, 41, said on an episode of the British radio show “Desert Island Discs.” 

The film’s director Sam Taylor-Johnson and her actor husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, offered their home to Dornan, his wife, Amelia Warner, and their toddler daughter Dulcie after the 2015 romance was widely mocked. 

“They let us have their place in the country, and we just shut ourselves from the world for a bit and then came out the other side,” he said.

“I was coming off the back of career-altering reviews for ‘The Fall’ and BAFTA nominations and all of this sort of madness — and then I was brought to just ridicule, almost.”

The steamy movie, based on E.L James’ S&M novel, holds a 25% on RottenTomatoes, although The Post awarded it a respectable three stars. However, it was also a box office hit, grossing $569.7 million worldwide. 

The “Fifty Shades” trilogy, starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.

Regardless of the reception, Dornan and co-star Dakota Johnson were already signed on to make two more sequels.

“It was a strange thing because then you are like: ‘Well, there is a bit of ridicule here, yet I’m now contractually doing two more of them’ — and knowing there would be more of that damnation to come,” he said.

The film trilogy grossed more than $1 billion.

Dornan has since gone onto more prestigious and better-received projects. He played Pa in 2021’s “Belfast,” which was nominated for best picture at the Oscars and scored him a best supporting actor nomination at the Golden Globe Awards. He was also riotously funny in “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” But, he says, he still can’t shake “Grey.”

“Even now, when I’ve just had very glowing reviews for recent work, there wouldn’t be many of them that don’t mention ‘Fifty Shades,’” he said. “A lot of reviews are like: ‘He’s great, but lest we forget, here’s when he wasn’t great.’ Give us a chance!”
