Tony Zhang: Co-founder and Advisor Emeritus of Tencent
Tony Zhang Zhidong, widely recognized as Tony Zhang, is a prominent Chinese businessman and co-founder of Tencent, one of the largest internet conglomerates in China. Born in 1972, Zhang played a crucial role in shaping the company’s technological landscape.
In 1998, Zhang co-founded Tencent alongside Pony Ma, another influential figure in the tech industry. Tencent, known for its various internet-related services and products, quickly rose to prominence. Zhang’s expertise and vision were instrumental in the company’s growth, particularly in the development of key technologies and platforms that have become integral to Tencent’s success.
For many years, Zhang served as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Tencent. During his tenure, he was responsible for overseeing the company’s technological advancements and innovations. His leadership helped establish Tencent as a leading player in the global internet industry.
In 2014, Zhang stepped down from his role as Executive Director and CTO, citing personal reasons. Despite stepping back from his executive responsibilities, Zhang Zhidong remained involved with the company. He now holds the title of Advisor Emeritus and Honorary Dean of Tencent Academy. Tencent Academy, established in 2007, focuses on employee training and career development, ensuring that the company’s workforce remains skilled and knowledgeable.
