Scooping Success: Ben & Jerry’s and Burlington Workers Seal Union Contract
Ben & Jerry’s, the renowned ice cream maker, has achieved its first contract agreement with workers at a retail shop in Burlington, Vermont, where the company originated. The agreement follows the workers’ petition to unionize last year, a move supported by both Scoopers United and the brand.
Approximately 40 employees at the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop in Burlington declared their intent to form a union in April of the previous year. Ben & Jerry’s, recognized not only for its delectable ice cream but also for its commitment to social activism, expressed support for the workers’ initiative.
In a joint statement released on Thursday, Scoopers United and Ben & Jerry’s described the agreement as a result of leadership and collaboration between the two parties. The statement highlighted the significance of working with a company that prioritizes workers’ rights and their aspirations to unionize, emphasizing the ease of reaching such a milestone in this collaborative effort.
Ben & Jerry’s, currently owned by consumer goods conglomerate Unilever, reiterated its dedication to operating the company in an inclusive and equitable manner. The company expressed pride in attracting employees who align with its values and acknowledged the hard work and commitment of the scoopers that contributed to the successful agreement.
Established in 1978, Ben & Jerry’s has a history of actively engaging in social causes. Despite the caution many businesses exercise in navigating politics to avoid alienating customers, Ben & Jerry’s has consistently taken an opposite approach, openly supporting progressive causes. The recent contract agreement with its Burlington workers underscores the company’s commitment to fostering a workplace environment that respects the rights and aspirations of its employees.
