Brittany Gilzene: Connecting Black People with Black Experiences
In the summer of 2022, Brittany Gilzene encountered a frustrating problem while searching for nightlife options in New York City. She noticed that Black events were often overlooked and difficult to find, leaving her and her friends at a loss for where to go. Inspired by this personal struggle, the 29-year-old entrepreneur decided to take matters into her own hands and create a solution. Thus, The Black Link Up was born—an innovative digital platform designed to connect Black people with Black experiences.
Gilzene recognized that her own experience was not unique. Many others faced similar challenges in finding events that catered to their interests and celebrated Black culture. The Black Link Up became a curated platform that provided comprehensive lists of Black experiences, including weekend events, weekly gatherings, and upcoming happenings. These lists, referred to as “links,” were regularly updated on the platform’s Instagram page. Gilzene understood the power of social media, particularly Instagram, in reaching her target audience and ensuring the platform’s success.
As a self-proclaimed daily user of Instagram, Gilzene knew that she could meet people where they were by creating engaging content. This approach allowed The Black Link Up to adapt quickly to the fast-paced nature of social media, making it a strong and relevant brand. Gilzene’s ability to tap into the Generation Z audience, a highly sought-after market, further contributed to the platform’s appeal. Many Gen Zers, just entering the nightlife scene after reaching the legal age, were seeking guidance and a place to start their social experiences. The Black Link Up provided exactly that—a starting point for those looking to explore and engage with the Black community.
Initially focusing on New York City, The Black Link Up has since expanded its scope. In addition to the curated lists, the platform now offers ticket giveaways and hosts a monthly in-person event series called Mixology. Held at the legendary 40/40 Club, Mixology serves as a pre-party mixer, setting the stage for a memorable night out. Gilzene’s ability to form partnerships with individuals and organizations aligned with her vision has been instrumental in making these events and giveaways possible.
Within a year of its launch, The Black Link Up has grown both in its offerings and its team. Gilzene’s initial vision attracted like-minded individuals who believed in the platform’s potential. Now, she leads a small but dedicated team of six, working alongside her full-time job in audience strategy. Gilzene’s graphic design skills, acquired through freelancing, have been invaluable in creating The Black Link Up’s logo and brand assets.
While currently focused on New York, Gilzene has recognized the demand for her brand in other markets. Expanding to other cities has become a goal she hopes to achieve, allowing The Black Link Up to connect and bring people together beyond its current location. However, amidst this growth, the platform’s core objective remains unchanged—to create a safe space where Black people can experience joy and genuine happiness together. Gilzene’s vision is clear: to give Black individuals the opportunity to meet, connect, and celebrate their shared culture.
In a world where Black experiences are often overlooked, Brittany Gilzene’s determination and innovation have filled a crucial gap. The Black Link Up not only solves a personal problem but also creates a community that fosters connection, positivity, and celebration. As the platform continues to grow and expand its reach, it is poised to become a vital resource for Black individuals seeking authentic and fulfilling experiences wherever they may be.
