New York City Launches “Shop Black NYC” Directory to Highlight Black-Owned Businesses

New York City has taken a significant step in showcasing and supporting Black-owned businesses with the launch of “Shop Black NYC,” an online business directory. Created by the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) under its Black Entrepreneurs NYC initiative, the directory features over 3,000 Black-owned businesses across the city, categorized by borough.

The initiative, which was strategically launched on Juneteenth in 2019, aims to address the disparity between the city’s population demographics and Black-owned businesses. While Black people make up 22% of New York City’s population, they account for only 2% of its small businesses. The Shop Black NYC directory aims to uplift Black entrepreneurship, providing a platform for visibility and economic growth.

Kevin D. Kim, the Commissioner of the Department of Small Business Services, recognizes the positive impact that supporting Black-owned small businesses can have on the entire city. By encouraging New Yorkers and tourists to shop locally and support Black entrepreneurs, the directory contributes to the growth and prosperity of neighborhoods as new businesses flourish.

Prior to the creation of the directory, there was no centralized list of Black-owned businesses in NYC. Kenneth Ebie, Executive Director & Chief Development Officer of BE NYC, played a crucial role in establishing the directory. The Shop Black NYC initiative not only increases revenue for these businesses but also promotes them through social media campaigns and fosters partnerships with borough chambers of commerce. The initiative aims to engage the community through various events and activities across the city.

The Shop Black NYC directory is a powerful tool in highlighting the vibrant and diverse Black-owned business community in New York City. It serves as a valuable resource for consumers looking to support local businesses and encourages aspiring Black entrepreneurs by providing visibility and recognition. Through this initiative, New York City is fostering an inclusive and thriving business environment that celebrates diversity and promotes economic empowerment.
